Research Presentation & Discussion: Art & Parkinson’s Disease

In June 2024, I had the pleasure of presenting to the Arts for Health team at Uillinn: West Cork Arts Centre about the research project ‘A Dive in Line’, which explored art experiences for individuals with Parkinson’s/Parkinsonism. A key objective of my research project related to the education of the local arts sector in West Cork, primarily through the establishment of a focus group.

We discussed how creative learning experiences and outputs can be optimised by configuring the environment with a focus on positioning, tone, and the maintenance of attention. Additionally, we highlighted the importance of using highly contrastive and visually acute colour choices to enhance visual discrimination, attention and choice.

Micrographia, or changes in handwriting, can be an early and distressing symptom of Parkinson’s. By sharing the canvas in one-to-one settings, mutual artistic learning and exploratory experiences unfolded between participant and artist, ultimately reframing and celebrating individual linework.

Should anyone be interested in learning more about the research ‘lightbulb’ moments and outcomes,  please get in touch!

Alternatively, I am delighted to announce that an up-to-date Case Study of learning and research outcomes will be available to read on artsandhealth.ie in September 2024!
